When it comes to mold removal companies, the certification requirements differ from state to state. Here at SafeAir Contractors environmental remediation, we work out of the state of Ohio. In Ohio, there is no license for mold inspection or mold remediation, but did you know that many companies claim to have a state license anyway? Today we want to talk a little bit about screening your Ohio mold removal company and how their claims to have a license can help you to determine which company is right for your needs.

Mold Certification: Why You Need to Screen Your Mold Removal Company

As we mentioned above, in the state of Ohio there is no state licensure when it comes to mold inspection or remediation. This means that any mold inspection or remediation company that claims to be state licensed is trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

Now, it’s important to note that a mold removal company in the state of Ohio can have certain mold certifications or affiliations with certain societies that work with mold, but these types of qualifications are NOT state licensure.

What Types of Mold Certification Can a Mold Removal Company Have?

A mold removal company can have “certification” or affiliation with a variety of associations, some of these include:

  • Certified membership in the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI)
  • Micro Consulting Certified Mold Inspector and Indoor Air Quality Testing Certification
  • Certified Mold Inspector- CMI
  • Certified Mold Assessor- CMA
  • Certified Allergen Inspector- CAI
  • Certified Indoor Air Quality Technician – CIAQT
  • Certified Mold Remediator – CMR
  • Membership in the National Association of Mold Remediators and Inspectors – NAMRI
  • Membership in the Indoor Air Quality Association – IAQA

These memberships and certifications represent nationwide and worldwide organizations as well as educational programs.

Should My Mold Removal Company Have All of These Mold Certifications?

The organizations listed above are representative of select groups and select professions so it’s not necessary that your mold removal company of choice have affiliation with all of these groups. That said, affiliation with at least a few of these organizations is representative of a company that is dedicated to the extended education of their employees and a dedicated interest in their profession.

But What About That State License?

A company that has affiliation with any of the organizations above but also claims to be licensed with the state for mold removal in the state of Ohio is a company that practices deceptive trade. It is not in your best interest to work with this type of company.

If the company you are considering also specializes in other types of environmental remediation, you should be aware that they may be licensed with the state for that service. What does that mean? It means that a company that offers multiple remediation services may not be being dishonest when they claim to be state licensed, they may just be being unclear with their claim.

For example, at SafeAir Contractors, we also specialize in and are licensed for asbestos abatement. While we are always clear about our state licensure being for asbestos abatement, a company that is less detail-oriented may simply advertise themselves as being “state licensed”. Does this mean that they are being dishonest? Well, we happen to think that our customers deserve all the details up front so that they know who they are hiring and what they can expect. We think that you should expect that too.

What Else Should You Look For in a Mold Removal Company?

When considering a mold removal company, we recommend looking for a company that has the following characteristics…and yes, SafeAir Contractors offers all of these and more…

  • Ongoing education and training classes for employees
  • A solid reputation in the community
  • Adoption of new techniques and tools to ensure thorough and efficient treatment of mold
  • A company that has no violations on record
  • A company that has a solid rating with the Better Business Bureau
  • Solid reviews from previous clients and a willingness to provide references when requested
